Being a self-employed business owner is good and bad. There are so many perks to being my own boss but there are disadvantages too.
The good part is setting my own hours and working from my home office so that I am available for my family as needed. I set the value for the service I provide so I don’t have a glass ceiling. I am a freelance professional so I have the freedom to choose my boss and only work with people and businesses that inspire me and offer diverse and exciting opportunities. When a work situation doesn’t work out, I can change it immediately since I have flexibility.
The bad part of being a business owner is trying to decide when I can have free time to play and hang out with friends. Where does a vacation fit in? The work doesn’t ever seem to be finished.
I know my value and count on myself to meet the needs of my clients. Hiring help is tricky since I would really need to trust someone that would represent me exactly. Finding someone who shares my same work ethic isn’t as easy as it should be. Cloning myself would be easier!
The self- employed are in high demand since they are not an employee so they pay their own taxes which saves a business lots of money on employment tax, disability claims and unemployment tax. A company who hires freelance support doesn’t have to pay health insurance or sick days. This is another advantage for companies that are growing and need to watch cash flow.
Freelance professionals are in demand today. Everyone needs to save money as the world is changing. A freelance professional is an expert in their field. Isn’t that what everyone wants and sometimes expects from an employee? Hiring freelance help instead of an employee means that you get better value for your dollar since the freelance professional takes pride in the work that they provide and time is not wasted watching the clock in an office setting.
The self-employed aren’t counting on one company to keep them employed until retirement. Those days are long gone. So working for myself means that I have more than one client. If you lose a client, you are prepared to find another unlike an employee who will have to start all over again and
possible change fields and take a pay cut to find another job.
If you are looking for work, wouldn’t it be more enjoyable to follow your passion and make a living doing something that you love? If you are a growing business and need additional support, doesn’t it make sense to hire an expert who is flexible and can meet your needs better than an employee? It isn’t for everyone but if it is for you good luck with your freelance adventure! What a great way to earn a living and bring the family closer together.
