If it is finally time to get that office/garage/closet/etc. organized once and for all, congratulations! You are on the path to removing stress from your life.
If you are a power organizer, you can maybe tackle 2-3 projects in one day. If you have limited time, focus on the one area that feels the most out of control. This is a great place to start since it is the area that is the most draining to your energy.
Create a plan for the layout of your space and shop for any needed supplies.
Now you are ready to get started. Where to begin? Start in one corner by sorting the items into categories. You can use boxes with labeled categories or create a space just outside your working area and begin sorting the items into sections.
Some categories to get you started would be – Trash, Donate, Other Room, Keep.
The Keep category is everything that should stay in the space. When the room is empty, this category will be sorted “like” with “like”. Sorting the items by type will help you decide how much storage space each item needs.
Once the space is empty, take out the trash and put the donate items in your trunk to be dropped off later. This would also be the time to take a few minutes and put the Other Room items where they belong.
Take a few minutes to vacuum, sweep and dust the area so that you have a fresh space to work with. If you have more time or some help, you could even do a quick paint job to further transform the space. It’s amazing how much better it will feel already.
Now you are ready to put all of your sorted items away according to the plan you made earlier. Line everything up and put it on display so that you can enjoy the items you have kept. You may need to adjust your plan slightly if you have more items than you thought and youmay decide that you need additional storage devices which you can shop for later. Don’t lose focus; continue putting the items in their place. The job is done when the last item from your Keep area is in its place.
Stand back and take stock of your hard work. The project you have been putting off for the last few months or years is now complete. Write out a quick shopping list if needed to add additional storage devices. This is an area that is now functional and ready for use. Enjoy!
To keep the space organized and to eliminate the need to repeat this process in a few months, always take a few minutes to put items where they belong when you are finished using them. A simple strategy but very effective at keeping toxic clutter out of your environment.
Transfer this energy to the next area that needs help and before you know it, people will be calling you a neat freak.
